THE STATE OF THE RACE: Best Picture

NOTE: From now on, rather than doing a sweeping update where I make predictions in all categories at once, I will be gradually updating a few categories each week, complete with an article. The brief worries that set in earlier in the week about Precious‘s Oscar chances have quickly faded as the Metacritic reviews have […]

Moviegoers Stay Home for Labor Day Weekend

I guess the usual moviegoers around the country had a similar attitude as me this weekend – it’s the last official weekend of summer, let’s get outside and enjoy it. As a result, nobody was in the theatres. This was one of the slowest weekends at the box office and all of the premiering films […]

‘The Final Destination’ Tops the Box Office

The battle between the end of summer horror movies at the box office has been won by The Final Destination. The film brought in $28 million dollars in its first week, $11 million more than its competition – Rob Zombie’s Halloween II. The Final Destination had the advantage of appearing in 3-D and therefore earning […]

The Basterds Beat Up the Box Office

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds has had an impressive opening at the Box Office – further showing that this August has been a particularly good one for new movie releases. Basterds does about the same as last week’s top debut District 9 did, bringing in $37.6 million. The latter film added $18.9 million to its total […]

News and Links: July 1, 2009

It’s been a few days since I’ve compiled a news and links page mostly because the majority of coverage has just been about the recent slew of deaths and I didn’t want to beat a dead horse (bad phrase?). Anyway, here are the news and links for July 1, 2009: Previews/Trailers: JoBlo points us to […]

New Trailer for ‘Inglourious Basterds’

All the reviews from Cannes seemed to imply that Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds was more talk than action (but in the best way possible). This new trailer seems to imply there is a lot of blood-spurting, Nazi-destroying action and it looks fantastic. I can’t wait to see this film. Inglourious Basterds is in theatres August 21st.

Post Cannes Oscar Predictions

The Cannes Film Festival did not really shake things up for this year’s Oscar race. Rather than allowing a frontrunner to emerge, it hinted that some of the films I thought had a chance really weren’t even possibilities. The awards yesterday mostly went to films that will see limited release in the U.S. and likely […]

Cannes Day 8 – ‘Basterds’ and ‘Wild Grass’

As I mentioned earlier the reviews of Inglourious Basterds came in mixed, but mostly positive. The other film that screened today was Wild Grass, which also had a mostly positive response. Screenings and Reviews: The press conference for Basterds seems like it was nothing but laughs and fun. Brad Pitt joked about how he got […]

‘Inglourious Basterds’ is a Hit!

Tarantino’s long awaited WWII film saw its first screenings at Cannes this morning and so far word is very positive. The first review I came across was Chris Hewitt from Empire who raved about the film: Tarantino has made a career out of subverting expectations – this is the man who made a heist flick […]
