One of the upcoming 2012 projects that I will be watching closely is David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, based on the novel of the same name by author Don DeLillo. The story mirrors James Joyce’s Ulysses as it follows one man’s journey across Manhattan in search of a perfect haircut in his tricked out, bullet-proof limousine. Along the way he has chance encounters with his wife, co-workers, and other strangers that become part of his journey.
International producer Paulo Branco (Alice, Ashes and Blood) announced the project in 2009 and David Cronenberg came on board shortly after. The cast consists of an eclectic mix of mainstream stars and independent darlings including some of the most enigmatic names in acting. Robert Pattinson stars as Eric Parker, the multi-millionaire protagonist and he is supported by Juliette Binoche (Certified Copy), Paul Giamatti (Sideways), Mathieu Almaric (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), Samantha Morton (Synecdoche, New York), Jay Baruchel (How to Train Your Dragon), and Kevin Durand (Robin Hood), among others. That cast alone is enough to make a movie fan salivate. Add the fact that David Cronenberg is one of the most dynamic working directors with films as interesting and varied as The Fly, Crash, and History of Violence in his oeuvre.
The Criterion Collection posted a 34 second teaser trailer for Cosmopolis on their Facebook page and, while it does not reveal much of the narrative, it does give us an idea of the style Cronenberg will employ. Our first glimpse of a character is a semi-nude woman clutching a gun with an immediate cut to a shirtless and apparently apathetic Pattinson sprawled across a bed. After that there are brief glimpses of images that range from sexy to suspenseful and give the impression that the world Cronenberg is crafting will be an adrenaline shot to the heart.
Take a look at the trailer below and be sure to share your thoughts in the comments!
Cosmopolis will be released in the U.S. in the Summer of 2012.
