ComingSoon.net has pointed us to the new teaser trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender. The film is more than a year from its release (July 2nd, 2010), but it’s already been highly talked and tweeted about and will be one of the most anticipated releases of next year.
It’s based on the popular animated TV series Avatar from Nickelodeon where human civilization has been divided into four nations: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. The fire nation is waging an oppressive war on the others. The hero Aang is prophesized to be able to control all of the elements and unite all of the nations. The film stars Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel, Aasif Maandvi, Shaun Toub, and more.
The trailer actually looks pretty solid, but it doesn’t tell you a whole lot about what we can expect. I don’t imagine Shyamalan will excel at an epic story like this. He has shown that he thrives on small independent projects like his first two or three films, and when you give him a budget he gets rid of the subtlety and just delivers crap.
If this film has even an inkling of success (which it probably will) you can expect several sequels.
