One of my favorite annual items during this awards season is Movie City News‘ massive compilation of critics top ten lists. Their list was updated last week and currently over 130 critics have weighed in with their top 10 films of the year. Unsurprisingly the list reflects most of the critics award groups with The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air in the number one and two spot, respectively. However, somewhat surprising is the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man in the number three spot. It still baffles me that the film that happens to be my favorite of the year has been almost completely snubbed from precursor awards.
The top 20 films include mainstream fare such as Star Trek and Avatar, as well as independent films like 35 Shots of Rum and Still Walking, and foreign films like The White Ribbon and Summer Hours. The variety of genres, budgets, countries, etc. shows the diverse tastes of the critics that comprise the list. It’s always fun to check out the list and see how well your favorite film of the year has done.
