Trailer for Lone Scherfig’s ‘One Day’ Featuring Anne Hathaway

Breakout An Education director Lone Scherfig’s next film One Day received an official trailer today and it looks like a better directed, better acted, British version of the upcoming Something Borrowed. It could potentially be an excellent film, but the trailer makes it look like a generic romantic dramedy like the dozens we see released every year.

The film stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess and is based on the novel of the same name by David Nicholls. The premise is that it follows one single day per year in the life of a young man and woman spread out over 20 years. Their first confrontation features them spending the night together after their college graduation and then we progress forward over twenty years with one day per year. Sometimes the couple are together on that particular day, sometimes not.

It’s an intriguing premise that could be brilliantly executed on film, but the trailer looks a bit on the sappy side. The dialogue is not perfect and the physical appearance changes the characters go through year to year seems forced. However, I’m not going to discount the film yet as Lone Scherfig definitely has some talent and could make this brilliant.

One thing that is certain is that the poster for the film looks great. Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts on the two British lovebirds.

One Day opens in the U.S. on August 19, 2011.
