Pixar had a rare off year in 2011 with their film Cars 2 being the only film they have ever released to receive mostly negative reviews from critics. There is no doubt that the animation studio is looking to bounce back in a big way and it looks like they can do that in 2012 with their next feature Brave. The trailer for the film appeared online today courtesy of indieWIRE and it showcases some of the beautiful animation that Pixar is known for. Their characters are magnificently drawn with enough human attributes to make them feel real, but not too specific to the point where it becomes creepy.
According to IMDb, Brave tells the story of Scottish Princess Merida, “an aspiring archer and impetuous daughter of royalty. Merida makes a reckless choice that unleashes unintended peril and forces her to spring into action to set things right.” We never find out in the trailer what that choice is, but we do see Pixar’s first female protagonist. Kelly McDonald voices Merida with a supporting cast that includes Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Kevin McKidd, Robbie Coltrane, Julie Walters, and Craig Ferguson.
I was never really excited for Cars 2, so it wasn’t a huge letdown when that film stunk, but my hopes are incredibly high for Brave. Knowing the types of movies that Pixar makes, I have no doubt that this will be a thoughtful, well-developed story with breathtaking animation. Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts in the comments!
Brave will be in theatres in the U.S. on June 22, 2012.
