One of the films that quickly went from off the radar to the forefront of the Fall movie season is Steve McQueen’s Shame. The British director’s follow-up to his well-received 2009 film Hunger has played at the Venice, Telluride, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals with great responses at each location. It was quickly picked up by Fox Searchlight Pictures and given a December release date in the United States.
The films stars Michael Fassbender as a Manhattan sex addict whose lifestyle is disrupted when his sister, played by Carey Mulligan, comes to live with him. Fassbender earned the Coppa Volti for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival and has been highly praised by critics throughout the festival season. Needless to say, I am incredibly excited for this film.
We get our first real glimpse of Shame today with the official UK trailer released by The Guardian. In it we see the dark Manhattan settings of McQueen’s film with a short glimpse of Fassbender’s performance. Some of the most exciting moments come when Fassbender and Mulligan are on screen together. Take a look at the trailer below and let me know your thoughts in the comments.
Shame will be released in the U.S. on December 2, 2011.
