Vulture Looks at the Cannes Awards Race

Dennis Lim of New York Magazine’s Culture Vulture is calling Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon the frontrunner for this year’s Palme d’Or. He says the film:

…has an edge, as the most obviously cerebral film in a competition overflowing with genre titles.

He also cals Tahar Rahim from A Prophet the frontrunner for Best Actor award and Giovanna Mezzogiorno of Vincere the frontrunner for Best Actress.

I agree about The White Ribbon as the Palme frontrunner. If the Cannes jury had a history of making the safe choice, like the Academy does, I would say A Prophet would be the frontrunner. The Cannes jury rarely goes for conventional, however.

For Best Actress, though, what about Katie Jarvis from Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank. He mentions her as a contender for the award, but I thought she was one of the best things to come out of Cannes this year?

It’s really hard to tell, but Lim does make some good points – check out his predictions.
