Just as Thor: The Dark World is set to hit U.S. theaters in two weeks – It lands in the U.K. tomorrow – it’s no surprise for us to get a trailer for Marvel’s next Phase 2 film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. If I may make the interjection, though, phase 2 has felt pretty dull overall. Our principal heroes have “gone their separate ways”, as made clear by the end of The Avengers, but we’re left with very little to be excited about in returning to them. Tony Stark went back to his normal shenanigans in Iron Man 3 and Thor is back on home turf in Dark World, but the impression we’re getting after The Avengers is less that the world is changed than it is everything’s the same, but a little rougher on our protagonists.
I should know by now not to raise my hopes for the next Marvel movie, but based on its first trailer, Captain America: The Winter Soldier looks to be trying to shake up its post-Avengers formula. It’s a much different world for Steve Rogers, the old Hollywood aesthetic of The First Avenger being traded in for colder political thriller tones, be it still expansive in scale as it focuses on neutralizing tactics of S.H.I.E.L.D., a far more industrialist enterprise than the cheesy, generic production values of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Marvel may well have plotted a safe course through Phase 2, but not a necessarily superfluous one.
And we’ll take any excuse to have Scarlett Johansson’s possessing her incredible charisma once more, so check out the trailer below and let us know your thoughts!
