One of the superhero franchises that I tend to forget is continuing to output movies is the X-Men series. Despite the fact that there has been a new X-Men movie just about every other year since 2000, they tend not to get as much attention as the big DC Comic Batman and Superman franchises or the Marvel Studios releases that benefit from the Disney publicity machine. The X-Men movies never seem to get universally panned by critics or widely adored by audiences. They just exist and apparently make enough money for the studio to keep pumping out more.
The original two X-Men movies from director Bryan Singer are among the best superhero movies ever made thanks in no small part to his fantastic cast. Singer established the trend of hiring respected Royal Shakespeare Company actors to play comic book characters in order to instantly give them gravitas and allow audiences to take them seriously.
For the next X-Men adaptation Singer returns to the directors chair and RSC alumni Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen reprise their roles as Professor Xavier and Magneto, respectively. This iteration spans multiple generations as we also get James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, who played the younger versions of Stewart and McKellen in the prequel X-Men: First Class. Hugh Jackman continues to be the only actor who will ever play Wolverine and various actors from multiple generations return including Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, and Nicholas Hoult.
The first X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer premiered today on YouTube. Check it out below and share your thoughts in the comments!
